Veggies from the farm

Thank you to the Kommetjie community for the overwhelmingly positive response to our shop. We are passionate about bringing fresh produce to your doorstep and as always are open to any suggestions you may have.

Our second farm at False Bay Hospital is now producing beautifully and we are due to start planting at Laerskool Paul Greyling in about three weeks time. In addition to our market garden and shops, we are installing outdoor classrooms, Permaculture inspired gardens and children’s vegetable garden allotments at various schools. We are currently busy with these gardens at Marine Primary in Oceanview, Oceanview High and Simonstown school; and will soon be creating gardens at Bay Primary, Star of the Sea Convent, Kleinberg Primary, Muizenberg Primary, St James Primary and Imhoff Waldorf.

Neighbourhood Farm is not only about growing great veg.
We tackle climate change vulnerability, human and ecosystem health, local job creation and skills development in areas with high unemployment. We also work to address the urgent need for food security by increasing the availability of healthy food with minimal footprint with the need for developing the local economy by integrating education, environmentally sustainable farming and social change. Our largest impact has been the creation of a well-being economy that keeps money local through job-creation (we employ 24 community members full-time (market gardeners, construction workers, security and maintenance staff) in areas where casual labourers often work below national minimum wage. Our staff are all sourced from local impoverished communities. We have individuals who are clearly demonstrating their security by evolving from requesting work-related pay on a daily, to a weekly and now a monthly basis.

As you know we are an NPO and the proceeds of sales keep the farms financially viable and allow us to expand into other communities as well as provide less affluent communities with resources, gardens and training. Our long-term goal is to faciltate the implementation of many more farms in many more communities who are in need of this social change.
